Adopt A Ward

3 years ago our Bishop wanted to look for an oppritunity to serve. He set out with several students in the ward to find other wards who had some families in need for school supplies. Eventually he found a president of a spanish branch who told him that he was an answer to prayers.

This is what started the "Adopt A Ward" program. Our ward, once a week, goes & helps kids from elementary through high school with their homework. We are only there for an hour, but it is one of the best hours of the week.

A few Sunday's ago, the primary president & her daughter came to our sacrament meeting to speak to us about the program. They brought some of the primary kids & they sang a song in spanish. It was beautiful. The spirit was so strong throughout the meeting and a lot of people were in tears, including myself. I couldn't wait to be a part of this wonderful oppritunity.

The first night I went was on my birthday. When I went, they didn't have very many kids, so I just watched for a bit. So, tonight was my first time to go and actually get some kids to help. I LOVED it! =) It was absolutely amazing. All the little kids were so polite and excited to get some help. I first helped Alanso, a second grader. He was so smart! He didn't even need my help...I think I was just there to give him a high five at the end! Since I had time left, I found another boy, Hector. He was in 4th grade. It brought back many memories of my childhood. It was pretty awesome & I can't wait until next week.

The Bishop told us that this program is actually being done in a few areas, and is being "tested" to see the results. I think it was such a great idea to have college students go help these younger, less fortunate kids. To let them know that they are smart & can have a bright future.

I am very grateful for this oppritunity to serve & to see the progress of these kids this year. I couldn't have asked to move into a better ward. I absolutely love my roommates. And so far, I love this ward....people are friendly & there is always something going on. Life is pretty good. =)
